ARTIST BIO
AUriel Fernandez is an abstract/experimental filmmaker that focuses on interpersonal connections between people and how those experiences shape us into who we are. Born in Illinois, United States of America, Fernandez got his Bachelors of Fine Arts at Northern Illinois University where he was able to pursue his love for film and as well develop a new found liking to video editing and film manipulation.
Uriel's love for the arts began at a young age that transferred into working into a video format. Using the world and the people around us as an inspiration and starting off point, the majority of the work produced breaks away from more traditional filming visuals as a way to explore and push what a film can be considered. Fernandez finds that allowing the viewer to sometimes create their own meanings for a film and not have the message directly stated through the text fulfills his creativity.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have always been interested in human emotions and the variety and complexity that comes along with it. How one day we feel joy and hope for our lives and futures, and the next we feel as if the world is falling apart from in front of us. These feelings and others grow more prevalent as I experience new things and say goodbye to others.
Using film and video footage as a medium, all works are made with the intention to have the viewer experience some kind of emotion and have a time for reflection within themselves as to why they are feeling that specific way. Whether created more conceptual or specific in their mission, the ultimate goal as an artist for me is to have the viewer connect with the media they are seeing and find meaning in it for themselves.
