ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m Angel Torio, but I use my artist’s name, Tala Kina. I’m a Filipino American artist based in Illinois, working mostly on digital and traditional illustrations, but my work also extends to 2D animation, logo design, and character design. My art style is a mixture of cute, anime-inspired characters and detailed diorama environments and cluster-core aesthetics, often using pastel and less saturated color palettes. I love incorporating Filipino cultural elements in my work, such as ancient Tagalog scripts into pieces such as Books vs. Technology 2023 to show my heritage while keeping my art accessible and modern. Surrealism also plays a big role in my environment artworks. You’ll see it in my traditional illustration Mood 2023 and my oil painting Candy Land 2022, where dreamlike and whimsical themes are made. For my character designs, I’m passionate about creating unique and expressive characters that tell their story through their overall look. Whether its digital or traditional artworks, I always aim to create pieces that will have viewers look for details, sense emotion, nostalgia, and wonder.
