ARTIST BIO
Raphael Thebaud is an Illinois based multimedia artist with a focus on 2d animation and editing, Wanting to express unique movement and capture life through his art. Taking inspiration from a multitude of famous early 2000’s Japanese animators such as Yutaka Nakamura and Norio Matsumoto, Raphael aims to represent the microexpression of movements through his work. Observing everyday things as inspiration for animation and his overall works.
Raphael started art due to the medium of animation and the expressive storytelling it conveys. Starting as a self taught traditional artist recreating drawing youtube tutorials in notebooks, he later gained a foundational art education later in high school, focusing on depictions of fantasy stories through ink and digital mediums.
Now enrolled in N.I.U Raphael seeks to increase his knowledge on the mediums of art he has always enjoyed and continue to refine his foundations, with the belief that solid foundations allow for flexibility in success.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Storytelling through motions is a core tenant of my work. Portraying a world that is larger than life is the essence of animation and I attempt to show that. The details of motion like clothes and hair allow for the illusion of motion to take effect. In this I see the reality of motion take hold as the viewer can sense the impacts of motion without sound. They can imagine the effects of the manufacturing physics before them to seamlessly believe in essentially moving still frames.
Character based fiction is incredibly important to me and is my primary inspiration behind the work displayed here.
