From an early age, I struggled to identify my true passion and integrate it into a meaningful career. Initially, I believed business was my calling, but after facing challenges in that field, I discovered my true passion—graphic design. From that moment on, I embraced it wholeheartedly. However, as I prepared to graduate high school, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted my plans, leaving me without the traditional send-off I had envisioned.
During my time at the College of DuPage, online learning during the pandemic made it difficult for me to stay engaged with my studies. When I finally had the opportunity to return to in-person classes, I felt unprepared and disconnected from the learning experience. I attempted to gain admission to Northern Illinois University’s Visual Communication program but was unsuccessful. Instead, I transferred into the Bachelor of Science in Art program, uncertain about my future.
At this point, I contemplated giving up on my major. However, my experience at NIU introduced me to a variety of graphic design practices that reignited my passion. This exposure led me to develop an interest in UX/UI design, and when I took my first class in the subject, I was one of the few students who fully grasped the principles of interactive design and usability. This breakthrough motivated me to expand my skill set further.
In my junior year, I decided to pursue a minor in marketing, an area I never imagined excelling in, especially after struggling with business courses in high school. Learning how to market effectively to an audience was an invaluable experience. As I progressed into my senior year, I also developed sales skills, which played a crucial role in helping me transition from an introvert to a confident communicator. This growth allowed me to engage with others more effectively, articulate ideas clearly, and teach concepts with confidence.
Through perseverance and adaptability, I have transformed my academic journey into a foundation for success in the creative and business aspects of design. I look forward to leveraging my diverse skills in graphic design, UX/UI, marketing, and sales to make a meaningful impact in my career.
