Jayla Watkins
Photography
At the culmination of her college career, Jayla Watkins is making photographic work that challenges perspectives and explores concepts in relation to spirituality, femininity, nature, and family. Inspired by artists such as Deana Lawson and Carrie Mae Weems, Watkins creates striking portraits and still-life images that exemplify great attention to the union of form and content. Watkins’ self-portraits establish vulnerability with the viewer, allowing her to represent the duality of artwork that is personal, yet also resonates within larger audiences. Journaling, being the genesis of her creative process, gives her work a unique authenticity that demands introspection and conceptual thought.
